Movie Star October issue
partial synopsis of the Benedict Cumberbatch interview
Benedict answered tons of the same old questions (e.g., 4,000 calories; loving JJ’s rebooted Star Trek; Martin Freeman’s John Watson audition) but some new ones. My synopsis is below.
On playing played Tesman in Hedda Gabler, who is boring and ordinary:
- Benedict does not think Tesman is boring. On the contrary, he believes acting is all about portraying complex, multi-layered characters such as Tesman.
On Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington’s reaction to Star Trek Into Darkness:
- Martin said he was very proud of Benedict.
- Amanda said “Oh my fu*king God! Benedict you were fu*king brilliant!”
On doing musicals:
- Sir Cameron Mackintosh talked to Benedict about a possible musical project after Benedict won the Evening Standard Theater Award. Benedict declined as he was not interested in that particular role. Benedict in turn brought up about a musical project which he would consider, but Sir Mackintosh was not interested.
Was there a particular piece of music Benedict listened to in order to psych up before doing Star Trek stunt scenes?
- He did not use any particular music to prepare for the role. However, he was into The Maccabees’ ‘Given to the Wild’ at the time.
- He listened to Jonsi’s “Kolniður” on the days he played the Creature on Danny Boyl’s ‘The Frankenstein.’ It helped him transform into the Creature.
- He typically listens to classical music, including James Rhodes’ piano pieces.
mervinede liked this what musical did Benedict want to do (I bet it was City of Angels) and what musical did Macintosh want him to do?
